Restoration of the Amazons of the Capitoline Museums

In 1999 during the closure of the Musei Capitolini for restoration, conservation work on the two statues of the wounded Amazons was carried out in the exhibition spaces of the Centrale Montemartini. These statues are copies of the original Greek sculptures, on display in the Hall of the Gladiators and in the  Hall of the Palazzo Nuovo on the Campidoglio.
The installation of an “open workshop” during the opening hours of the Museum allowed the public directly to follow the various phases of the works and the techniques used in the restoration, which was illustrated by comprehensive educational panels.
