Special openings of Rome's museums over various weekends in September and October provide an additional opportunity to enjoy and appreciate the many wonders they contain either for the first time or as an unexpected bonus repeat visit. As of the 11th September and until the 30th October, Romans and tourists alike can visit the Vatican Museums on a Friday evening, whilst the Capitoline Museums will be opening their doors between 8pm and 11 pm on the 12th and 26th of September and 17th October, the Centrale Montemartini on 19th September and the 10th and 31st October between 7pm and 10 pm, and the Museum of the Ara Pacis on the 3rd and 24th October, also between 7 pm and 10 pm. Sunday mornings on the other hand, is the time to take a stroll along to the Roman Forum and the Colosseum.

“Evenings in the Museums” is a project put forward by Rome's Deputy Mayor, Mauro Cutrufo and promoted by the City's Department for Tourism and the Department for Cultural Policies and Communications – Superintendency of the Arts, in collaboration with the Opera Romana Pellegrinaggi, and thanks also to the contribution made by the Special Superintendency for Rome's Archaeological Heritage. .
It is part of a comprehensive tourism project, that also involves hotels, tailor-made for families and young couples who can benefit from the special deals on offer to enjoy a cultural weekend in the capital at truly advantageous prices.
“We are already thinking about repeating the same thing again in the future so that it will become a feature that will hold real appeal to tourists, especially during the capital's low season,” declared Mauro Cutrufo, Rome's Deputy Mayor. “If that is to happen,” he continued, “we must be able to count on the continuing and active co-operation of the hotel industry and also put together deals with the airlines and railways so that we can create offers that are even more attractive and competitive.”
Two promotional cards have also been introduced as part of this initiative, namely the “VATICAN AND ROME CARD” and the “ROMA PASS SPECIAL”. The “VATICAN AND ROME CARD” includes the Open Bus Roma Cristiana, local public transport and entrance to the Vatican Museums every Friday night during September and October (€ 25).
Pilgrims or visitors who buy one of the special promotional packages on offer will also have the opportunity to buy the “ROMA PASS SPECIAL” card for €15.00 instead of €23.00. The card can been picked up from one of the Tourist Information Points at Termini Railway Station, Castel Sant'Angelo or Fiumicino Airport, and covers admission to the Capitoline Museums, the Ara Pacis Museum or the Centrale Montemartini on Saturday evenings and the Colosseum and Roman Forum on Sunday mornings as detailed above
Those who do not hold a “Roma Pass Special Card” can still enjoy visiting the museums during these additional opening times by purchasing a ticket at the entrance.
